A senior administration official recently met with Tesla CEO Elon Musk to discuss ways to boost electric vehicle (EV) production in the U.S. The meeting was conducted in a virtual format. Other auto executives, including General Motors’ Mary Barra and Ford’s Jim Farley, also participated.
During the meeting, the senior administration officials discussed battery supply chain concerns, charging infrastructure, and electric vehicles. They agreed that a solid charging network is essential to speeding the transition to clean transportation. Electric vehicle sales are expected to be over one-third of new vehicle sales in the United States by the start of the next decade. According to a US Department of Energy analysis, the country has the capa
city to produce 43,000 public EV chargers by 2021. This will provide charging services for 2 million vehicles.
As the EV industry grows, there are concerns over labor policies. There have been efforts to organize a union for workers at the company’s Fremont, California plant. This is a problem for a pro-labor Biden administration. However, the president’s administration has praised the investments of GM and Ford.
In February, the White House announced the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Formula Program, which will fund $5 billion over five years to help install a charging network on 53,000 miles of highways. Currently, 35 states have approved plans for the program, and the remaining state plans will be reviewed on a rolling basis.
As the EV industry continues to grow, there is also concern that the electric grid will be overloaded. An entire industry is aware of the imminent electrical load that will come to the US grid, and they are working to address this issue. One key piece of the Biden climate change agenda is a nationwide charging network. While this is not a large percentage of the EV ask, it is a significant piece of the puzzle.

The Biden administration has announced an executive order that seeks to encourage American automakers to sell more electric vehicles. It also seeks to support union-made EVs. These EVs are eligible for a $2,500 extra tax rebate.
